1987年李蓬从北京师范大学毕业;1988年获得中美CUSBEA奖学金留学美国;1995年获得加州大学圣地亚哥分校博士学位,随后在新加坡国立大学分子与细胞生物学研究所、美国达拉斯西南医学中心,霍华德休斯医学研究所进行博士后研究;1997年应聘在新加坡分子和细胞生物学研究所任研究室主任和助理教授;2003年任香港科技大学生物系研究室主任、助理教授;2006年全职回国任清华大学生物科学与技术系教授;2009年起任清华大学生命科学学院副院长;2012年获得何梁何利基金科学与技术进步奖;2015年12月当选中国科学院院士;2016年11月当选为发展中国家科学院院士;2017年获得第二届叶剑英奖。
