Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute (hereinafter called “the Institute”) is a Public Institution affiliated to Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, led by Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Turing Award winner and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the strong support of Shanghai Municipality, the Institute was unveiled on January 9, 2020 and settled in the AI Tower of Xuhui at the end of September of the same year.
Its mission is to conduct cutting-edge research in basic science, with focus on AI, information security and quantum computing. Since its founding, SQZ has delivered outstanding results in these basic sciences as well as related interdisciplinary domains, laying a solid foundation for becoming an internationally influential institute.
Adhering to the concept of interdisciplinary research, the Institute focuses on artificial intelligence, modern cryptography, high-performance computing systems, quantum computing and quantum artificial intelligence gradually expanding into other interdisciplinary research fields such as neuroscience, financial technology, medicine, information security and atmospheric science, etc. It is expected to nurture and promote a number of scientific theories and key technologies with important influence, enhance the innovation strategy capability in fields such as artificial intelligence, and support the institute to form international influence in the short term.
With the advantage of new R&D institution system, the Institute coordinates with universities such as Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University in scientific research, talent introduction and student training, forming a benign interaction and collaborative development led by the Institute and supported by top universities in China. In addition, by organizing various seminars and academic conferences, a platform has been established for the communication of scientific researchers in various fields, promoting innovation and integration among various disciplines. At present, a profound cross-discipline integration has been carried out in AI+ medical care, AI+ architecture/manufacturing, AI+ economy/supervision, and advanced artificial intelligence technology has been promoted and applied to various industries to solve difficult problems in other fields.
The Institute has established 30 research topics around five cutting-edge aspects: artificial intelligence, interdisciplinary research, modern cryptography, high-performance computing, quantum computing and quantum artificial intelligence.
