Introduction to Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute

Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute (hereinafter called “the Institute”) is a Public Institution affiliated to Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, led by Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Turing Award winner and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. With the strong support of Shanghai Municipality, the Institute was unveiled on January 9, 2020 and settled in the AI Tower of Xuhui at the end of September of the same year.

The mission of the Institute is to break through the basic research of artificial intelligence and lead the cross-development of artificial intelligence in the world. After a year of construction, it has made positive progress in multiple aspects such as topic layout, team building, research ecology, academic reputation, and has initially produced a batch of basic research results with international influence in artificial intelligence and related cutting-edge fields, laying a solid foundation for building an internationally influential research institution.

Adhering to the Concept of Interdisciplinary
Focusing on Basic Research in Six Aspects

Adhering to the concept of interdisciplinary research, the Institute focuses on six core aspects directions: artificial intelligence, modern cryptography, high-performance computing systems, quantum computing and quantum artificial intelligence, physical device and computing, and biological intelligence gradually expanding into other interdisciplinary research fields such as neuroscience, financial technology, medicine, information security and atmospheric science, etc. It is expected to nurture and promote a number of scientific theories and key technologies with important influence, enhance the innovation strategy capability in fields such as artificial intelligence, and support the institute to form international influence in the short term.

Promoting Interdisciplinary
Innovation and Integration

With the advantage of new R&D institution system, the Institute coordinates with universities such as Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tongji University in scientific research, talent introduction and student training, forming a benign interaction and collaborative development led by the Institute and supported by top universities in China. In addition, by organizing various seminars and academic conferences, a platform has been established for the communication of scientific researchers in various fields, promoting innovation and integration among various disciplines. At present, a profound cross-discipline integration has been carried out in AI+ medical care, AI+ architecture/manufacturing, AI+ economy/supervision, and advanced artificial intelligence technology has been promoted and applied to various industries to solve difficult problems in other fields.

Tap into Cutting-edge Technology Focus on Integration and Innovation

The Institute focuses on six cutting-edge research aspects: artificial intelligence, modern cryptography, high-performance computing, quantum computing and quantum artificial intelligence, physical devices and cross-intelligence. At the same time, it steadily advances the cutting[1]edge research of artificial intelligence and various cross-fields, striving to achieve significant breakthroughs. By the end of July 2021, the Institute has established 33 research topics around six cutting-edge aspects: artificial intelligence, modern cryptography, high-performance computing, quantum computing and quantum artificial intelligence, physical devices and cross-intelligence.
