On July 4th, 2024, the ultimate list of the highest awards at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, the SAIL Awards (Super AI Leader, Award for Outstanding Leaders in AI), was announced. Assistant Professor atInstitute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University, PIat the Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute, and co-founder of Xinghai Map, Hang Zhao, led his team to win the "SAIL Star" award with the "Vision-centric Advanced Autonomous Driving Platform".
Award Introduction
Zhao's team is committed to promoting innovation and application of high-level autonomous driving technology, constructing a vision-centric high-level autonomous driving platform. The main achievements include: the first pure vision panoramic BEV detection model DETR3D, the multi-sensor fusion detection model FUTR3D, the vision-based end-to-end trajectory prediction model ViP3D, the first 3D occupancy prediction benchmark Occ3D, the first online high-precision map model HDMapNet, the vector high-precision map model VectorMapNet, the crowd-sourced mapping solution based on neural priors Neural Map Prior, and the DriveVLM system that uses visual language large models to solve the long-tail problem in autonomous driving.
This technology has broken through the generalization bottleneck of intelligent driving technology, achieving significant results in visual perception, mapless autonomous driving, and solutions to long-tail problems, with clear innovation and application value. The technology platform has produced more than ten top conference and journal papers, widely recognized by the academic community, and has been successfully applied on hundreds of thousands of domestic new energy vehicles, greatly promoting innovation in the new energy vehicle and autonomous driving industries.
Biography
Hang Zhao
Graduated with a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the guidance of Professor Antonio Torralba, the head of the AI&D department at MIT. Subsequently served as a research scientist at Google's self-driving car project, Waymo, proposing a series of foundational works in the field of autonomous driving prediction.
Main research interests include multimodal learning, autonomous driving, and robotics. The work has been reported by many mainstream technology media, such as BBC, NBC, MIT Technology Review, etc.
Award Introduction
The SAIL Award, as the highest-level official award in the field of artificial intelligence in China, is dedicated to discovering globally recognized and acclaimed projects in the field of AI. It aims to encourage projects that have made directional technological breakthroughs and application innovations in artificial intelligence, which are changing or will change our future lives. Since its inception in 2018, the award has been selected annually, with this year's edition receiving over 200 entries from nearly 20 countries and regions. After several rounds of preliminary and secondary reviews, a total of 10 SAIL-winning projects, including the SAIL Star, were ultimately selected.
